Private experience · Palermo & Monreale

A private day in Palermo and Monreale

The longest day out from Trapani, and the most layered. A dense, monumental capital on the coast, and above it a hill town whose cathedral looks back down over the whole plain.

Palermo seen from above: tiled rooftops and palm trees spreading towards a cathedral tower and dome, with the port and the sea beyond

What the day is like

This is the furthest of the day trips from Trapani, and the one that changes register most. Palermo is a capital: dense, loud, layered with Norman, Arab, Baroque and nineteenth-century building, often on the same street. Nothing else in the province prepares you for it.

Monreale sits on the hillside above the city, about ten kilometres up from the plain. Its cathedral is the reason people come — the interior is covered in gold ground mosaic — and beside it a cloister of paired columns under carved arches. From the edge of the town you look back down over the Conca d'Oro to Palermo and the sea.

Putting the two together in one day works because they explain each other: the same Norman rulers, one building at the centre of a capital, the other on a hill above it. It also makes for a long day, and the two halves are best not rushed against each other.

How the day is divided between them, how long you spend in each, and what you actually go inside is agreed with you beforehand.

Highlights

01
Monumental Palermo
A capital's worth of architecture in a small centre — cathedral, palaces and churches within walking distance of each other.
02
Historic streets
Narrow lanes, courtyards and market streets between the monuments, where most of the character of the city is.
03
Monreale Cathedral
The Norman cathedral on the hillside, its interior covered in gold ground mosaic.
04
The cloister
Rows of paired columns under carved arches beside the cathedral, open to the sky.
05
The view from the hill
From Monreale the whole plain opens out below, with Palermo spread along the coast and the sea behind it.
06
City and hill town together
Two very different places within a short drive, which is much of why the pairing works.

Why book it privately

A long day that should not feel like one

Palermo and Monreale in a single day is a lot of ground, and on a coach itinerary it usually becomes a schedule to keep rather than a day to enjoy. Privately, the balance between the two can be set in advance and adjusted on the day — more city and less hill, or the other way round.

You are collected in the Trapani area and travel with your own driver, with nobody else on board. The route, the pace and how the day is put together are agreed with you beforehand.
