A private day in Erice

A walled town on a mountaintop above the Gulf of Trapani, reached by a road of switchbacks or by cable car. Cobbled lanes, courtyards, and — on a clear day — a view that runs from the salt pans out to the Egadi islands.

The walls and castle of Erice lit at dusk, with lamps along the path below them and the gulf and coastline stretching away beneath

What the day is like

Erice sits at around 750 metres, on a mountain that rises straight out of the coastal plain. The change is abrupt: you leave the heat of the salt pans, climb for twenty minutes of switchbacks, and arrive somewhere noticeably cooler, quieter and older.

Inside the walls the town is small enough to walk in an afternoon and dense enough to keep surprising you. The streets are narrow, paved in worn stone, and they open without warning onto courtyards, churches and terraces looking out over the gulf. There is no rushing on that surface, which is rather the point.

This is a slow, atmospheric half of a day rather than a checklist. What you actually do in it — how long you stay, where you stop, whether you combine it with somewhere else — is arranged with you beforehand.

Highlights

01
The climb up the mountain
The approach is part of it: a road of switchbacks, or the cable car, with the coast and the salt pans dropping away below you.
02
Cobbled lanes and courtyards
A dense medieval street plan in worn stone, with quiet corners a few steps off the main routes.
03
Views over the gulf
On a clear day the view runs across Trapani and the salt pans out to the Egadi islands.
04
Castello di Venere
A Norman castle on the cliff edge, on a site that has been built on since antiquity.
05
Erice's almond pastry
The town has a long tradition of almond sweets, made in its pastry shops.
06
Weather of its own
At this altitude the air is cooler than the coast, and cloud can close over the town within minutes.

Why book it privately

The town rewards an unhurried visit

Erice is not a place that works well on a fixed timetable. The interest is in the lanes you were not planning to walk down, the courtyard you find behind a church, the terrace where the view opens up. A private day means you can stop where it is worth stopping and leave when you are ready.

You travel with your own driver and nobody else on board. The route, the pace and how the day is put together are agreed with you in advance, and can be adjusted while you are there.
