Private experience · Segesta

A private day at Segesta

A Doric temple standing by itself in open countryside, and an ancient theatre cut into the hill above it. Segesta is one of the quietest of Sicily's great archaeological sites, and it rewards taking your time over it.

What the day is like

Segesta sits inland, in hill country away from the coast. There is no town around it. The temple stands by itself in a field, and the rest of the ancient city is spread across the hillside above it, reached by a road that climbs behind the ridge.

The temple was never finished. Its columns were left unfluted, and there is no roof and no inner chamber — which is much of what makes it striking. You are looking at the frame of a building, in the open, with the countryside running away behind it.

Higher up, the theatre is cut into the rock near the top of the hill, its rows of seats facing out over the valley towards the sea. Getting between the two is part of the visit rather than an interruption to it.

It is a site that suits an unhurried, private visit. How long you stay, whether you walk up or ride up, and whether the day continues somewhere else afterwards is arranged with you beforehand.

Highlights

01
The Doric temple
A complete peristyle standing in open ground, without the town that would normally have surrounded it.
02
Stonework left unfinished
Columns that were never fluted, and lifting bosses still on the blocks of the base — the building stopped mid-construction.
03
The theatre above the valley
Rows of seats cut into the hillside near the summit, open to the valley and the hills beyond.
04
Open countryside
Hills, fields and very little else built in view — unusual for a site of this importance.
05
The climb between the two
Temple and theatre sit apart, on different parts of the hill, with the walk or the shuttle in between.
06
Room to look
The site is spread out and open, so there is space to stand back from things and take them in.

Why book it privately

An open site, best taken slowly

Segesta is spread out, and the interest is in the space between things: the walk up to the theatre, the view from the top row of seats, the temple seen from further and further back as you leave. On a fixed schedule that is exactly what gets cut.

You travel with your own driver and nobody else on board. The route, the pace and how the day is put together are agreed with you in advance, and can be adjusted while you are there.
