A private day in Mazara del Vallo
A port town at the mouth of the Mazaro river, on the southern coast of the province. Kasbah lanes decorated with ceramic tiles, a Greek bronze satyr brought up from the sea by fishermen, and a harbour that still lives from the catch.
What the day is like
Mazara sits where the Mazaro river meets the sea, on the coast that looks south towards North Africa. It was here, in 827, that Arab forces landed to begin the conquest of Sicily, and the town has kept a southern outlook ever since.
The heart of the old centre is the Kasbah: a tight weave of alleys, small courtyards and dead ends dating back to the Arab period. Many of its walls are now set with painted ceramic tiles, and the quarter is home to a large Tunisian community.
In 1998 a fishing boat working the Strait of Sicily brought up a bronze figure of a dancing satyr from the seabed. Restored, it is now the centrepiece of a museum in the former church of Sant'Egidio, in the middle of town.
How long you stay, and whether the day also takes in Marsala and its salt pans, is arranged with you beforehand.

Why book it privately
A town that rewards wandering
Mazara is best understood on foot and without a schedule: a turn into the Kasbah, a stop at the museum, a long look at the boats along the river. A private day lets the pace follow your curiosity rather than a group's.
You travel with your own driver and nobody else on board. The route, the pace and how the day is put together are agreed with you in advance, and can be adjusted while you are there.

San Vito Lo Capo
A wide crescent of pale sand under Monte Monaco, at the far tip of the province, with the drive out along the coast worth as much as the arrival.

Palermo & Monreale
The Norman capital, its markets and its layers of empire — and above it Monreale, whose cathedral interior is covered wall to ceiling in gold mosaic.

Erice
A walled town on a mountaintop, reached by cable car or a road of switchbacks. Cobbled lanes, courtyards, pastry shops, and a view that runs from the salt pans out to the Egadi islands.
